Progesterone is a s a steroid hormone produced primarily in the gonads and adrenal glands. During the 2nd half of our cycle (luteal phase) the corpus luteum, which develops from the ruptured ovarian follicle, secretes progesterone. Progesterone helps to build up our uterine lining for possible pregnancy. If no pregnancy occurs, progesterone will decrease causing menstruation.
Progesterone has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscle of the uterus to prevent uterine contractions. It also regulates the maternal immune system. BUT progesterone serves use more than just in pregnancy.
During Perimenopause/Menopause Progesterone helps with other things and is important to be incorporated into your HRT.
Progesterone helps with mood, cognition, wellbeing, sleep, it has a natural relaxing effect. It helps to support our immune system. Helps to support our thyroid, bone, and balances estrogen.
